Mandroids
![]() |
Mandroids are high-tech battle suits originally designed to allow combat-trained SHIELD agents to handle super-powered beings or threats. Designed by Tony Stark, the suits were first seen in AVENGERS #94 (they allowed Fury's SHIELD boys to play along during the Kree-Skrull War). Mandroids made their IRON MAN debut in issue #227. Large, yellow, and definitely jumbo-size, the Mandroid Armor holds one man, who must climb into the suit to "drive" it. Each "pilot" views the world through reinforced glass slits. (Pilots have inner jet packs for emergency ejection in case of suit failure or destruction.) The Mandroid battle armor, while not nearly as powerful as Iron Man's, is darn good. Tough, agile, and well armed, it'll handle most anything. But Stark didn't just build the suits, he trained the first batch of users. This made it even easier for him to take them out in the first Armor War. Still, they didn't go down without a fight. The left arms feature a multi-spectrum cannon capable of firing neuronic blasts and a tractor beam. The right arm is a power claw. Plus, the suits have a powerful defensive force-field (although because of its power drain, users should refrain from relying on it extensively). Known capabilities: Flight-enabled via rockets in the boot units; comm units; laser and stun cannons. Current status: Currently there are several variations for the Mandroid battle armor in use--by good and bad guys alike. Although Stark designed and built only five--all of which he destroyed in the first Armor War (#227)--Stane International later built more. To this day, their models continue to be big sellers. (Iron Man would later go up against a contingent of these newer models in his War Machine armor.) Plans for the suits also got out to the black market where unscrupulous manufacturers have capitalized on demand. There appears to be no shortage of good and bad guys looking for the edge only a self-contained combat arsenal can give you. |
