PAGE ONE Commentary

Joe Casey: All of the Spymaster's dialogue here was meant to state outright how he feels about his enemy, and how he feels about the costumed criminal lifestyle. I wanted to present a character that reveled in being a super-villain. he loves this life. Plus, I wanted to give him the insights that your average Iron Man fan might have about the Stark's character, about the whole secret i.d. thing. Sinclair sees right though his bullshit... it's part of what makes him a dangerous adversary for Stark.

PAGE ONE

FIVE PANELS

Panel 1.

We open in a rich man's study. Close angle on an ornate end table. On the table, we see an open bottle of expensive brandy, a snifter (half-full with that same brandy), a gold letter opener, an expensive, antique candleholder, a copy of FORTUNE magazine (that we can't quite see the cover to here . . . but we will on the next page), etc. A smooth orange/purple glow from off-panel (the sunrise through the window, off-panel).

1 SPYMASTER (no pointer): They say TRUTH is a relative concept.

Panel 2.

We pan over to a bank of hi-tech computer equipment (further back in the room, set against a wood-paneled wall). Several viewscreens of various sizes, all glowing different colors. It should seem very sci-fi in the midst of this very stately setting.

2 SPYMASTER (no pointer): For some, the most DIFFICULT truth to stomach is the truth about WHO and WHAT we really are . . .

Panel 3.

Angle on the main bay window in this study (square panes). The glow from the sunrise outside fills the window. In the foreground, a silhouetted figure of a man (this is the new Spymaster), looking out the window (his back is to us).

3 SPYMASTER: . . . those of us who EMBRACE that truth, no matter how UGLY it may be, have a strategic advantage. The world is complex ENOUGH without living in SELF-DENIAL . . .

4 SPYMASTER (2): Sometimes a MASK can help reveal that truth. Even to YOURSELF. The SYMBOL reveals the MAN.

Panel 4.

C/U of the Spymaster's hand, reaching down and his finger pressing a button on the computer console. The button lights up when pressed.

5 SPYMASTER (from off): ANOTHER hard truth: identification of the ENEMY. Recently, it's been all too OBVIOUS . . .

Panel 5.

Pan over as a 3D-style hologram (one color) of Iron Man appears, projected from the computer console. If this were a movie, the hologram would be spinning slowly. Maybe some blocks of data are also hovering on small, holographic screens next to the Iron Man hologram.

6 SPYMASTER (no pointer): . . . you're trying to HIDE again. From ALL of us.

7 SPYMASTER (2, no pointer): Now, you may be able to keep CERTAIN truths hidden from YOURSELF . . . but not from ME.
