Iron Man 2 in Theaters May 7, 2010

Iron Man 2 reunites director Jon Favreau with Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, and Samuel L. Jackson.  Don Cheadle takes up the role of Jim Rhodes. Currently filming, the movie also stars Mickey Rourke, Scarlett Johansson, and Sam Rockwell. Samuel L. Jackson is back as Nick Fury.

Keep up on all the IM 2 news by checking here and the Armory’s News page (for more in-depth info), and by following Favreau’s Twitter.

So, War Machine, Y/N?

The footage shown in San Diego featured some blistering shots of War Machine.  So, yes, WM will be in Iron Man 2.

Left: A War Machine mock-up (based on an early IM publicity shot) that’s making it’s way around the Internet.  (I wish I could credit the creator . . . )

What Do We Know?

Heroes

Tony Stark/Iron Man: Robert Downey Jr.

James Rhodes: Don Cheadle

Nick Fury: Samuel L. Jackson

Pepper Potts: Gwyneth Paltrow

Villains

Mickey Rourke is playing Ivan Vanko a.k.a. Whiplash (the character is an amalgam of Crimson Dynamo and Whiplash, being both Russian scientist and killer).

Scarlett Johannson is playing the deadly Black Widow.  We don’t know exactly which incarnation of the character she’ll be playing or whether she’ll be a black hat or a white hat--or make a transition from the former to the later during the film.  But she’s sure to be a bad girl.

Sam Rockwell is playing an Americanized Justin Hammer, a big-time business rival to Stark.

Story Speculation

Honestly, we don’t know very much.  Yet.  From what we do know (Hammer; Whiplash; a Monaco sequence; Black Widow; and hints from Favreau that Tony’s having some troubles being Iron Man) all signs point to IM 125-128 (?) and Tales of Suspense 52 and 53.  Also, since the Whiplash rig seems to sport some Stark-esque tech (above, note the resemblance to Stark’s own chest apparatus), I’m betting that Stane passed along some of Tony’s tech to his terrorist allies, and, of course, the Mandarin (right?).  I’m not saying the Mandarin will make an appearance--but I bet Hammer’s wearing a ring.

Big sets/scenes

A huge set was built out at the Sepulveda Dam outside of Los Angeles.  Since an enormous green screen was used as well, I don’t think it’s too big of a leap to say that there’s going to be some serious CGI effects (and probably a huge battle scene there).

The film spent three days at Edwards Air Force Base, which was seen in the first film.

A large outdoor set is a replica of the Monaco Grand Prix.

Rumors

Most of these are not true (as we know now), but they are still kind of fun.

Back in December of 2008, CraveOnline reported the following tidbit.  It’s not true, but Tim Robbins would’ve been good as Tony’s father (BTW, John Slattery will play Howard Stark):

Jon Favreau has reportedly hired Tim Robbins to play Daddy Stark in Iron Man 2. His part is said to be part of a pivotal flashback sequence, where Howard Stark (father to Tony, of course) will be involved in the Captain America project. In the first Iron Man, Tony Stark had mentioned that his dad helped build the atom bomb during WWII, and this Captain America/Super-Soldier Serum story fits right along those lines.

What's strange is that, along with that story, is another claiming that Robbins won't play the elder Stark, but rather Hawkeye, another character in the Marvel universe.

More Iron Man 2 rumors: John Cho as Mandarin and Tommy Chong as Mandarin's father.
